Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

A realist portrait of working-class Essex BFFs takes a turn into deeper, darker territory in writer/director Fyzal Boulifa's resonant feature debut. Thick-as-thieves friends since school, sensible Lynn (extraordinary street-cast newcomer Roxanne Scrimshaw) and blue-haired tearaway Lucy (Nichola Burley) find their bond tested when catastrophe strikes at home. As small-town gossip turns toxic, Lynn's loyalty is tested. A tragedy of class, community, morality and lynch-mob mentality emerges, like a Douglas Sirk melodrama reimagined by Andrea Arnold (whose Wuthering Heights featured Burley). The key twist could have veered into tabloid-esque sensationalism, but Boulifa tackles its aftershocks with artful care. The two leads are also magnetic throughout, with Burley deftly pinpointing Lucy's vulnerability, and Scrimshaw's warily expressive face holding our attention right up to the last, stinging revelations.
