Review

A star rating of 1 out of 5.

The old evil twin device is given another airing in an unremarkable programmer courtesy of Monogram, one of the cheapest exploitation studios in 1930s Hollywood. Lionel Atwill has the perfect alibi for murder - he is deaf-mute, and a witness heard the killer speak. However, he has a deaf-mute twin hidden behind a panel. He substitutes his brother in court, but equally clever justice wins the day. A sorry mix of low-grade suspense and comic relief means The Sphinx stinks! Monogram remade the same story as The Phantom Killer in 1942.
