Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

David and Lisa are mental patients. He's autistic, obsessively tidy, hates being touched and has a recurrent nightmare about cutting people's heads off with the hands of a clock. She's a schizophrenic who talks only in childish, gobbledegook rhymes, or else doesn't talk at all. On the one hand, this seems like a typical slice of American psychobabble about misunderstood kids, apparently aimed at the arty folk who haunt Greenwich Village cafés. The acting, however, raises the story to an entirely different level. The performances of Keir Dullea and Janet Margolin are totally sincere and deeply touching as they are drawn together, rather like Adam and Eve searching for that first innocent touch of hands.
