Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Though nowhere near as fun as the 1995 original, this excessive adaptation of the classic video game does at least give fans their fix of brutal gore. The basic story remains the same: chosen Earthrealm warriors pit themselves against an evil sorceror's minions for global control, or his space kingdom will take over the planet. The bland heroes pale in comparison to their villainous counterparts, the best being Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), whose freezing powers are the most effectively realised. Director Simon McQuoid brings visual slickness to his feature debut, but the repetitive kung fu fighting, arcade iconography, familiar monsters and in-joke deaths and one-liners still prove a perplexing bore. Overreliant on dicey CGI, the film gets bogged down in exposition and back-stories, and will have gamers running back to the original Paul WS Anderson film with open arms.
