Terry Staunton

The ruthlessly competitive world of vegetable growing (no, really) reaps comic rewards in this mockumentary, which flits between charming and savage. Would-be prizewinner Caroline (Jo Hartley) suspects sabotage when her giant marrow is disqualified from a contest due to a hairline crack, and sets out to discover the truth, with the help of her staunchest supporters: lovable lapdog Willy (Celyn Jones) and conspiracy theorist Paul (Richard Lumsden). Soon, the trio's investigations take them into the orbits of suburban swingers, shady politicians and other, equally maverick veg enthusiasts. The film's clear template is the work of Christopher Guest (Best in Show in particular), though this tale is resolutely more British in tone, making for a warm-hearted celebration of small-town eccentricity. More familiar names Fay Ripley and Aisling Bea are along for the ride, but have too little time on screen to make much of a impact. Hartley, however, is a hoot, whether in her deadpan asides to camera or when expressing the emotional turmoil of a wronged gardener.
