Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

During the war, Graham Greene had a contract with MGM where he wrote what he later remembered as a two-page treatment for a movie that was never made. When the treatment was discovered some 40 years later, it turned out to be a 60,000 word novel set in France after the Liberation, which tells the story of a once wealthy lawyer who gave away his fortune in exchange for his life. The book was published in 1985, and this TV-movie version is impeccably directed by The Naked Civil Servant's Jack Gold. Joining Anthony Hopkins in the starry cast, Kristin Scott Thomas, Derek Jacobi and Cyril Cusack keep the somewhat convoluted tale on the rails.
