Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

As modern spins on traditional fairy tales go, this is one of the more compelling. Starring a number of pop-culture figures, including Latin-American singer Camila Cabello, Pose star Billy Porter and Frozen's Idina Menzel, the film takes the original story and smoothes out its less-than-modern issues. There is still the same soot-smudged heroine (Cabello), wicked stepmother (Menzel) and wanting prince (Nicholas Galitzine), but this Cinderella is an aspiring designer, who would rather try entrepreneurship than jump instantly into marriage. Unlike other blockbusters' attempts to shoehorn feminist values into their plots, Cinderella's messages are baked into the story by writer/director Kay Cannon (Blockers), and celebrated through a playlist of both original and adapted music numbers. The film's tone is somewhat chaotic at times, but otherwise this sharp, unabashedly camp adaptation is both fun and fresh.
