Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

In this unconventional romance from director Luis Mandoki, Jennifer Lopez is excellent as embittered Chicago cop Sharon Pogue, who's hopelessly at odds with her father and brother's brutality towards their wives. On the streets, however, she is as aggressive as they are until rescued one day by enigmatic drifter Catch (Jim Caviezel). The two begin a tentative "relationship", but Lopez soon realises that Caviezel's ethereal manner has its roots in a tragic accident. Here Mandoki examines whether people with damaged personalities can come together in spite of their emotional baggage, and it's this darker slant that makes Angel Eyes intriguing. What lets it down is an appalling finale, which reeks of schmaltz and studio pressure for a conventional ending. The director should never have compromised.
