Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Ti West (The House of the Devil) has forged a reputation for slow-burn shockers, and this affectionate throwback to 1970s schlock will either appeal as an engaging character study or test the patience of anyone waiting for something to actually happen. After a century of service, the Yankee Pedlar Inn is closing down, prompting the last remaining employees - genial Sara Paxton and ghost enthusiast Pat Healy - to finally uncover proof that it is one of the USA's most haunted hotels. Once the amateur ghostbusters begin experiencing alarming events, and scares start to percolate through the panic, it becomes a weirdly effective, if rather quaint, exercise in nostalgia-brushed spookiness. West's measured mood accumulator is something akin to The Shining done in an indie slacker style, which is more notable for its sparkling dialogue, unexpected warmth and oddball casting (including Top Gun's Kelly McGillis) than its rather underwhelming payoff.
