Review

A star rating of 1 out of 5.

In his 1937 adaptation, Frank Capra managed to make some sense of the fanciful ideas raised in James Hilton's novel, but they are rendered risible in this ill-conceived musical remake. Aiming for the glossy sophistication he brought to his earlier projects, producer Ross Hunter presents Shangri-la as a Himalayan country club instead of a utopian sanctuary. Peter Finch, meanwhile, looks as though he's in purgatory as he exchanges trite truisms with High Lama Charles Boyer, though he's not alone in struggling with the dire ditties penned by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.
