Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Clearly intended as a treatise on patriotism at the height of the Second World War, this handsome biopic explores how someone of German extraction could become a true Briton. Heading a capable supporting cast, Wilfrid Lawson is imposing in the title role as he atones for his squabbles with both Church and State by composing The Messiah. Most intriguing, however, is the fact it was co-photographed by Jack Cardiff and Claude Friese-Greene, the son of the cinema pioneer whose life was told in The Magic Box, which was also filmed in Technicolor by Cardiff.
