Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Throughout his career, Indian director Satyajit Ray turned to the works of his mentor, Rabindranath Tagore, for inspiration. Victor Banerjee loses his wife (Swatilekha Chatterjee) after he breaks with the tradition of seclusion and introduces her to a dashing patriot (Soumitra Chatterjee) in this compelling conversation piece, based on Tagore's novel, exploring the dangers inherent in both repression and liberation. One of the few true auteurs of world cinema, Ray also wrote the script and composed the score. However, while the leads give immaculate performances and the director never used colour better, the film is not quite a masterwork.
