Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Sense is in extremely short supply in this joyously unhinged comedy from screenwriters and stars Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, whose script for Bridesmaids bagged them an Academy Award nomination back in 2012. There seems little likelihood of that this time - the story is a bit of a mess - but there's plenty to chuckle at and admire, as inseparable middle-aged besties Barb and Star (played by Mumolo and Wiig respectively) get into spectacular scrapes on the holiday of a lifetime. Heading to the titular resort town after being laid off from their department store jobs, the pair go mad buying knick-knacks, hook up with Jamie Dornan's duplicitous Edgar and find themselves embroiled in the schemes of the villainous Sharon Gordon Fisherman (also played by Wiig), whose scarring childhood experience has left her thirsty for vengeance. Director Josh Greenbaum lends proceedings some pep, while Wiig and Mumolo deliver affectionate but eccentric portrayals that meld the twee and prurient. Wrapped in a lurid colour scheme, and with talking crabs, drug-fuelled dancing and even musical numbers on offer, Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar is a film where absolutely anything goes.
