Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

See how good an actress Miranda Richardson always was, despite being internationally acclaimed for movies like Damage, Tom and Viv and Made in Dagenham. She's incandescent as Soho nightclub hostess Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in Britain, in this absorbing, brutal account of the infamous 1955 murder case. Sticking closely to the facts about why she shot her aristocratic lover, racing driver David Blakely (Rupert Everett), this film from Donnie Brasco and Four Weddings and a Funeral director Mike Newell has a great sense of period and strikes the exact balance between fascination and luridness.
