Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This debut feature from Norwegian director Joachim Trier is a determinedly chic treatise on art, ambition, women and friendship, but his fascination with structure and style distracts him from the scrambled lives of his characters. The film opens with a slick voiceover sequence that posits what might have happened had childhood buddies Anders Danielsen Lie and Espen Klouman Hoiner both published their first novels. Trier then continues to play nouvelle vague games with the realities that befall the pair, as Danielsen Lie tastes success and winds up in an asylum and Klouman Hoiner struggles to secure literati acceptance. However, this fragmentary approach serves only to distance us from action that is - with the exception of Danielsen Lie's Parisian interlude with girlfriend Viktoria Winge - largely devoid of genuine emotion. It's a confident, laudably controlled and occasionally witty picture, but it also feels rather self-conscious.
