Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Director Peter Bogdanovich explores the troubled life and tragic death by drowning of actress Natalie Wood in this unnecessarily overlong and ultra-melodramatic TV movie. Co-produced by Wood's sister, Lana, it bolsters an episodic narrative with extensive archive material and talking-head reminiscences from real-life family and friends. Old Hollywood fans will enjoy the insider gossip and fun star portrayals, as Wood (played in adulthood by a well-cast Justine Waddell) progresses from child performer to serious acting sensation, crossing paths with the likes of Marilyn Monroe and James Dean along the way. But once her mother-made neuroses and unhappy relationships with drink, pills and men - particularly Michael Weatherly's self-centred Robert Wagner - kick in, events become a relentless endurance test that reaches a climax with the dragged-out imagining of her final moments alive.
