Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Godfrey Reggio completes the trilogy begun with Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi in this visually striking, if self-consciously provocative montage documentary. Translating as "war as a way of life" in the Hopi language, the title allows Reggio to explore a range of sociopolitical issues in loose segments centring on the pros and cons of technology, modern society's obsession with success and celebrity, and humanity's irresistible urge to self-destruct. Philip Glass's score is again sublime, but some may object to Reggio's manipulation of archival footage as a means of persuading us to look again at a planet in crisis.
