Crime drama starring Danny Dyer and Tamer Hassan. Young Frankie flees south London for Spain's Costa del Sol, and is taken under the wing of fellow Brit Charlie, a flamboyant playboy and ex-con, who draws Frankie into his gang's dangerous world of crime. Initially the oufit's illegal exploits run smoothly, but when they diversify into cocaine smuggling, the entire organisation begins to crumble.
Sexy Beast meets GoodFellas in this boisterous 1980s-set crime drama. Directed by The Football Factory's Nick Love, it charts the rise and fall of expat British gangsters living on Spain's sun-drenched Costa del Crime. Danny Dyer stars as the young Londoner who goes on the run to Malaga, only to be initiated into a violent world of drugs and organised crime by flamboyant ex-con Tamer Hassan. Verbally and stylistically the film perfectly captures the era's social and sartorial excesses, providing a hilarious sense of nostalgia that complements the tale's overall black humour. However this self-conscious scene-setting does start to obstruct the plot, with the 80s soundtrack becoming particularly intrusive. Despite a predictable storyline, the actors acquit themselves well, delivering a torrent of bad language and witticisms with skill and relish. None of the characters are likeable, but they are highly watchable - even if the genre itself is getting stale.
