Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

In this surprisingly well done character piece, based on the book Sorrow Floats by Tim Sandlin, an alcoholic woman (Roseanna Arquette) meets up with two recovering alcoholic men who are about to set off on a cross-country trip. She joins them, hoping to retrieve her child who has been placed with her estranged husband. Worthy performances are turned in by Arquette and her travelling companions Paul Hogan and Judge Reinhold (Beverly Hills Cop). A certain amount of self-help psychobabble prevails, but John Badham, who directed Saturday Night Fever, handles this road movie competently.
