No Icelandic director has started their career with such thematic acuity and stylistic assurance as Benedikt Erlingsson, who follows Of Horses and Men (2013) with this timely satire that touches upon parochial and global issues with rare wit, intelligence and nuance. At its centre is Halla (Halldora Geirhardsdottir), a beloved choir director who is conducting a one-woman assault on the corporate behemoths endangering the island's environment. Armed with her trusty bow and arrow, Halla has concealed her vigilante persona from her identical twin, Asa (also Geirhardsdottir), who supports her sister's efforts to adopt a Ukrainian orphan. But the government is so desperate to apprehend the "Mountain Woman" jeopardising much-needed Chinese investment that it launches a campaign of media misinformation to demonise her. With Johann Sigurdarson, Jorundur Ragnarsson and Juan Camillo Roman Estrada providing droll support, this is not only winningly played by the exceptional Geirhardsdottir, but it's also impeccably directed, as Erlingsson uses Bergsteinn Bjorgulfsson's discreet camera to capture Iceland's rugged beauty and frame precise visual gags involving musicians, singers and television sets.
