Summary

Cult favourite Matt Berry offers his unique take on Brexit in this one-off comedy special to mark the passing of the Article 50 deadline. Reuniting with collaborator Arthur Mathews for the first time since Toast of London, Berry plays rogue historian Michael Squeamish, who is on a mission to discover the origins of Brexit, and offer some interesting opinions on Britain's current plight along the way. Through creative use of archive footage and filmed interviews, Road to Brexit unashamedly plays fast and loose with the facts to create a joyously surreal whistle-stop tour of Britain's relationship with Europe, from the 1950s right up to Brexit.

Review

For the tiny number of people who adored Channel 4’s Toast of London, and the even smaller group who feel what we really need right now is to give the Brexit crisis similar treatment, this will be perfect.

Written by Arthur Mathews (who co-wrote Toast as well as Father Ted), it features Matt Berry as rumbling historian Michael Squeamish, looking back on the history of our relations with Europe via doctored archive clips and spoof interviews.

Only a rough taster was available for preview, but it will clearly include distilled silliness: one clip where an interviewer puts a complex question about EU agriculture policy to Billy Idol, for instance, is a joy. And Matt Berry can’t not be funny.
