Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Gerard Butler's resourceful Secret Service agent Mike Banning is back for a third adventure, having picked himself up after both Olympus and London Has Fallen, but action in the field is taking its toll on his ageing, injured body which, according to his doctor, is "a disaster waiting to happen". To make matters worse, Mike is on the run after being accused of masterminding a spectacular assassination attempt on the US president (Morgan Freeman), and must fight to clear his name, helped by a shadowy figure from his past (Nick Nolte). Although it tapers off after the early, brilliantly staged attack on Freeman (an eye-popping drone strike that leaves 18 other agents dead), the movie is a perfectly acceptable box-ticking action thriller offering good bang-for-buck value. Nolte's grizzled survivalist brings a much-needed injection of humour to proceedings, precisely when the narrative runs the risk of taking itself too seriously.
