Claude Rains was the unsung villain or patient victim of many a Hollywood melodrama. This underused British actor gets a crack at the lead in this creaky drama from director Maurice Elvey, in which he peddles fake predictions at a music hall until he suddenly starts hitting nails on the head. When his warnings about an impending tunnel disaster go unheeded, he finds himself the scapegoat for the hysteria that precipitated the tragedy. Rains is impressive throughout, whether faking on the stage, pleading to be taken seriously or explaining his friendship with Jane Baxter to jealous wife Fay Wray.
