Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

During the First World War an innocent young girl (Margaret Sullavan) and a handsome lieutenant (John Boles) meet at a dance in Virginia and fall in love, but he is shipped to France before they can meet again. Pregnant with his child, she goes to live with her feminist aunt (Billie Burke) in New York, but when he returns he has forgotten her. Romantic soap opera to be sure, but as played, and as directed by specialist of the genre John M Stahl, of a superior kind. The film, which opens on the day of the Wall Street crash and unfolds the beginning of the affair in flashback, wonderfully evokes the temper of the times and Sullavan, as ever, suffers with poignant dignity.
