Horror starring Peter Cushing and Ron Moody. Reared by wolves, then raised by a travelling showman, an innocent-looking young man named Etoile arrives in 19th-century Paris. His affinity for animals lands him a job at a zoo where he falls for a regular visitor, Christine. However, love leads to jealousy and anger - dangerous emotions for a werewolf. Soon a series of grisly murders are puzzling Inspector Gerard and Paul Cataflanque, the city's canny coroner.
David Rintoul plays a lycanthropic zoo keeper in this Paris-set slice of cod Hammer horror directed by Freddie Francis for Tyburn, his son Kevin's company. Although Francis offers little in the way of new ideas or situations - even the wolfman make-up is reminiscent of Oliver Reed's in The Curse of the Werewolf - he does summon up a Gothic moodiness between the few scares. Peter Cushing gives his usual top-notch performance as the steely coroner pursuing the snarling Rintoul.
