Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Dereck and Beverly Joubert may have won an Emmy for their 1994 wildlife documentary Reflections on Elephants, but this Disney real-life adventure merely highlights the difficulties of combining wildlife footage with an invented storyline. The film was shot over 18 months in Botswana, but the action doesn't gel with the screenplay, which feels like a rush job. There's simply no novelty in the story of a calf that gets separated from its mother, attaches itself to a passing herd and lives happily ever after following encounters with lions and poachers. The dialogue is pretty undistinguished, too, despite the efforts of a vocal cast that includes Joanna Lumley and Angela Bassett.
