Creaking more with each frame, this passable melodrama was adapted from a 1935 French film (Dark Eyes) by Russian director Victor Tourjansky, who fled to France after the Bolshevik Revolution. The story concerns a father who is forced to lead a double life to prevent his proud daughter from discovering that, rather than being a high-flying tycoon, he is merely a waiter at a posh restaurant. Frank Capra told a similar story with considerably more charm in Lady for a Day and, try as he might, Otto Kruger is too stuffy to be sympathetic.
