Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Blind ambition destroys youthful integrity in British director Paul Morrison's visually stunning account of surrealist eccentric Salvador Dalí's student days in 1920s Madrid. It traces the artist's gradual transformation from shy dandy to outlandish celebrity narcissist, using his rumoured university romance with Spanish poet Federico García Lorca as a keystone. Twilight heart-throb Robert Pattinson shows impressive range as Dalí, whose anti-conformist stance attracts the friendship of fellow avant-garde scholars Lorca (striking newcomer Javier Beltrán) and film-maker Luis Buñuel (Matthew McNulty). The leads give exuberant though reductive performances, with Pattinson in particular increasingly reliant on jarring caricature. Consequently, their characters' inimitable brilliance is never quite captured, a weakness exacerbated by clumsy dialogue and a sketchy handling of the turbulent political backdrop. But it's the overall lack of drama that ultimately squanders the narrative's rich potential, resulting in a rushed and unexpectedly cautious last act and a diluted finale.
