Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Croods by name, but sophisticated by nature, this Flintstones-esque slice of CGI-animated family fun has Nicolas Cage and Emma Stone voicing the dad and daughter of a not-so-modern Stone Age family who hit bedrock when a rock slide destroys their cave. Fleeing impending apocalypse in the company of a more evolved teenager (Ryan Reynolds) from another tribe, they seek safety, shelter and enlightenment through a colourful and weirdly trippy landscape of land whales, elephant mice and piranha parrots. Like the Madagascar stable it stems from, The Croods sometimes mistakes frantic for fun, and its emotional complexities, tween plot bias and all-over-the-place ending may baffle younger viewers. But there's enough prehysterical slapstick to keep the kids entertained and adults amused. And, for once, the 3D actually enhances the action rather than feeling tacked on.
