Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

M Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense) makes ambitious, technically accomplished genre movies with a twist. Sometimes they're great (Unbreakable), sometimes awful (The Happening), and Old falls somewhere in between. Based on the graphic novel Sandcastle by Pierre-Oscar Lévy and Frederick Peeters, it follows unhappy couple Vicky Krieps and Gael García Bernal and their precocious kids, Alexa Swinton and Nolan River. While on holiday at a swanky resort, they are directed to a secluded beach where everyone starts to age rapidly. The stage seems set for a classy little shocker, but Shyamalan's usual single-mindedness deserts him, and the film pulls in different directions along with the shifting dynamics of the group. Though there are moments of pulse-quickening body horror, the film's pace is mostly sluggish, with telegraphed plot revelations and flubbed emotional cues piling up like flotsam.
