Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Deprived of official funding, Zhang Yimou shot this quirky urban comedy with little formal preparation and a great deal of ingenuity. The dizzyingly mobile, hand-held technique will surprise those expecting his trademark stateliness, but the frenetic movements are totally in keeping with hip bookseller Jiang Wen's foolhardy quest to avenge himself on the club-owning mobster who not only steals his girl, but also causes him to smash passing academic Li Baotian's prized laptop. Capturing the bustle of Beijing, as well as sustaining the breathless comic pace, Zhang still finds time to comment on the growing influence of western fads and attitudes.
