Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This light tale takes the premise that great novels emerge from the minds of tortured, unhappy individuals, rather than well-adjusted, happy people. Karen Gillan plays a Scottish author who has drawn on her traumatic early years and troubled relationship with her father (Gary Lewis) to write a bestseller. The problem for her dishy publisher (Stanley Weber) is that, on the back of her success, Gillan has become extremely happy and is suffering from a serious case of writer's block. So he surreptitiously sets out to sabotage her life in order to make her unhappy - and productive - again. Gillan has the attractive, ditzy qualities of a Scottish Audrey Hepburn, but while she is utterly charming as the happy, kooky girl-about-town, it is impossible to believe in her as the author of a piece of bestselling misery - and it doesn't help that she could still pass as a teenager. Her publisher is so mean-spirited that it is difficult to accept that even the most naive young girl would be attracted to him, no matter how good he might look. However, despite the film's flaws, Gillan's passion, director John McKay's nice touches and some attractive Glasgow locations just about save the day.
