Summary

Romantic comedy from the Farrelly brothers, starring Ben Stiller and Michelle Monaghan. Bachelor Eddie Cantrow is 40 years old and under pressure to settle down. He starts dating the beautiful Lila after saving her from a mugging, and six weeks later they are married. But on his honeymoon, Eddie discovers there's more to his new bride than meets the eye. He also begins to fall in love with another guest at the hotel.

Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Ben Stiller may be older and greyer than he was in the 1998 Farrelly brothers hit There's Something about Mary, but he hasn't outgrown their distinctive brand of scatological comedy. Here they deliver an outrageously crude remake of Neil Simon's 1972 tale of love and marriage, with Stiller as awkward bachelor Eddie, who marries Lila (Malin Akerman) in haste then repents at leisure during a disastrous honeymoon in Mexico. Put off by his new wife's slobbish habits, and left on his own when she's confined to her room with sunburn, Eddie falls for fellow holidaymaker Miranda (Michelle Monaghan). All sorts of comic complications ensue, often involving bodily fluids and/or functions. Surprisingly, Simon's original set-up withstands the coarseness, ensuring even the most risqué scenes have a sweet undertow. Still, it's hard to imagine original stars Charles Grodin and Cybill Shepherd enacting a graphic moment in which a woman salves her partner's jellyfish sting by relieving herself over his prone body.
