A weird, legendary western whose existentialism and minimalism is as much the result of having no budget as the philosophical inclinations of its director, Monte Hellman, and its star, Jack Nicholson. Shot in the empty deserts of Utah, it has Nicholson as a grinning hired killer involved with bounty hunters and a mysterious woman in a journey into the real or imaginary past. It's like Dalí made a western, or Treasure of Sierra Madre set in Marienbad, a puzzle picture that's either intentionally metaphorical or just ineptly made. European critics loved it but Americans barely knew it existed. Hellman and Nicholson made a second western, Ride in the Whirlwind, on the same location trip.
