Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Friday the 13th meets The Hot Chick in this gory and intermittently funny twist on the body-swap movie. Bullied high-schooler Millie (Kathryn Newton) has her life turned inside out when she's attacked by a psycho (Vince Vaughn) whose mystical dagger causes the two to switch bodies. Stuck as a 50-year-old man on the run, Millie has just 24 hours to put things right, with help from her freaked-out friends (Misha Osherovich and Celeste O'Connor). It's a brilliant concept that director Christopher Landon injects with some lively, blood-drenched set-pieces. Sadly, though, Freaky isn't quite as smart, pacey or scary as his Happy Death Day films. The "Blissfield Butcher" makes for a curiously bland movie psycho, and the inherent tension of a murderer hiding in plain sight at a school is oddly underplayed. As a vehicle for Vaughn, though, the film works brilliantly. The one-time wedding crasher lights up the screen with a surprisingly vulnerable performance in which he constantly apologises for his newfound strength, and shares poignant romantic scenes with Millie's crush (Uriah Shelton). So while the film doesn't quite deliver on its slasher-comedy promise, Vaughn is definitely worth tuning in for.
