Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Jessica Lange gives another powerful performance as a mother coping with starting life anew after the death of her husband in this tender drama from director Paul Brickman. Trying to pay off mounting debts and reduced to living in a small apartment with her sons (Charlie Korsmo and Chris O'Donnell, in one of his first roles), she also tries to begin a new relationship while battling against depression. Honest and absorbing, this once again confirms Lange as one of the best actresses of her generation. Watch out, too, for strong supporting turns from the excellent Joan Cusack and Kathy Bates.
