Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

The only thing worse than an over-hyped remake, is an over-hyped remake of an overrated original. The frankly slapdash 1966 film got by largely on the roguish charm of Michael Caine as the seducer of the title. Here, Jude Law takes on the role and, while he's effective as eye-candy, he seems to be struggling to believe his character could be such an unconvincing combination of connivance and dimness. With the action transposed to present-day New York, Alfie Mark II (a commitment-phobic limo driver) has his wicked way with a series of ladies before it begins to dawn on him that maybe an endless string of brief sexual encounters isn't what it's all about. A creaky effort has been made to update the original's post-pill, pre-feminism attitudes towards women, but the chatty hero - this version retains Alfie's straight-to-camera speeches - is still a bit of a loser.
