A TV producer films a profile of a bad-tempered doctor working to help people in Brooklyn's slums during the Depression. Drama, starring Paul Muni and David Wayne
Paul Muni's last Hollywood film (and his first in over a decade) gave him the kind of worthy character he relished portraying: a dedicated doctor working among the Brooklyn poor who has to choose between appearing in a live television tribute and helping a patient in trouble with the police. Muni retained the knack of letting you know you were seeing great acting, and he duly picked up his fifth Oscar nomination as best actor. (His tricks included removing his false teeth to look haggard after a heart attack.) The character could have done with a few faults, but Muni still wins you over.
