In this captivating domestic drama from French director Mia Hansen-Løve (Bergman Island), Léa Seydoux plays Sandra, a single mother and translator whose carefree demeanour shows signs of strain. Still coming to terms with the fact that her beloved father (Pascal Greggory) is suffering from a neurodegenerative disease, Sandra begins an affair with a married friend (Melvil Poupaud). There's lovely work from the leads, particularly Seydoux as the resilient yet vulnerable Sandra, while Nicole Garcia is a scene-stealer as her no-nonsense mother, who has reinvented herself as a hardcore environmental activist. Eschewing moral judgement and adultery film clichés, Hansen-Løve brings the lightest of touches to emotionally heavy material, showing how desire and devastation can co-exist. The result is a defiantly fresh take on the knottiness of life, and our capacity to cope during the most trying of circumstances.
