Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Former Olympic swimmer Esther Williams proved that not only was she a superb athlete, but with her robust good humour and innate sexiness she was also able to bring big bucks into the box office for MGM, who duly rewarded her with the trappings of a major musical star. Trouble was, the inevitable swimming sequences placed ridiculous strictures on Esther's plots. Here she plays a movie star, on location in Hawaii, torn between dashing Ricardo Montalban and stalwart Peter Lawford. The production numbers are the thing, though, and, as ever in these musicals, the use of Technicolor is exquisite. Williams made better films either side of this one, but she was (and is) a talented lady, and there's much pleasure to be gained from watching this movie.
