Summary
A story about an English businessman in 1930s Germany who encounters a financier who has forged his career on greed, corruption, and opportunism, rather than the traditional British principles of decency and fair play.

Graham Greene's least-known novel was the inspiration behind this underrated film which, like Cabaret the year before, offers a fascinating glimpse of pre-Second World War Germany. Michael York plays a sponging Englishman whose dealings with Peter Finch's sinister financier almost lead him to become incestuously involved with his own sister (Hildegard Neil). The potential for atmosphere is vividly explored by director Peter Duffell, but the film never lives up to expectations.
