Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

What caused anthropologist Ethan Powell (Anthony Hopkins) to go on a murderous rampage while studying gorillas in Rwanda? That's what idealistic psychiatrist Theo Caulder (Cuba Gooding Jr) tries to find out when Hopkins is finally arrested and placed in a mental institution in Phenomenon director Jon Turteltaub's plodding treatise on animal-versus-human instincts. Loosely based on Daniel Quinn's novel Ishmael, the film naturally features a fine performance from Hopkins as the intellectually frozen man resorting to the law of the jungle for justice. Yet Turteltaub's odd mixture of Gorillas in the Mist and One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest is hardly riveting because it's mainly constructed as a series of prison interviews, with Gooding Jr ranting while Hopkins sits in self-imposed silence. Basic Instinct, indeed!
