Produced by Lars von Trier's Zentropa company, this millennial shocker starts out as a "race against time" contagion movie. But it soon departs from the Panic in the Streets format and descends into End of Days malarkey, as a flesh-eating virus and an obscure case of arson take on satanic significance. Anders Ronnow-Klarlund ensures Ole Lemmeke's virologist and student girlfriend Kirsti Eline Torhaug are constantly on the move, as they shuttle between Denmark and Romania. But while he judges the jolts well, Ronnow-Klarlund fails to generate a tangible sense of evil, despite the best efforts of Udo Kier as a zodiac-obsessed cultist.
