In this Disney comedy, plain good fun is at the wheel, with its foot down to the floor and Herbie, the Volkswagen with as much bottle as throttle, is a brilliant invention. Dean Jones, as his racing driver owner, and David Tomlinson, as Jones's ruthless rival, work wonders to stop the little Beetle running away with the film. Having shown a flair for fantasy with the evergreen Mary Poppins, director Robert Stevenson here demonstrates a sure slapstick touch.
