Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Fury was originally called The Samaritan, and cynics might suggest that the change of title is a deliberate attempt to cash in on the release of Avengers Assemble, where Samuel L Jackson plays a character called Nick Fury. There's no connection between the two, of course. Here, Jackson plays Foley, a con artist fresh out of prison, who's determined to go straight. But he's blackmailed into one last scam when his dead partner's son (Luke Kirby) threatens to reveal a terrible secret to Foley's new girlfriend (Ruth Negga). Tom Wilkinson takes the money and runs as the crime kingpin who serves as the grifters' latest "mark". The performances are all fine and the film is perfectly watchable. But it's just so generic that this hardly distinguishes itself from your average straight-to-DVD offering.
