Although famed for mentoring Greta Garbo, Mauritz Stiller also merits mention as one of the pioneers of the sophisticated screen sex comedy. An unofficial adaptation of a Ferenc Herczeg play, this may be contemporaneous with the bedroom farces of Cecil B DeMille, but it's considerably more subtle - indeed, it even contains a specially commissioned ballet by the Swedish Royal Opera. Anders de Wahl plays a specialist in insect breeding, whose flirtatious wife, Tora Teje, is pursued by both sculptor Lars Hanson and ageing baron, Torsten Hammaren. But, the star of the show is Karin Molander's delightfully demure soup-serving niece.
