Review

A star rating of 5 out of 5.

Twelve years after directing Bright Star, Jane Campion makes a triumphant return with this ferocious western about toxic masculinity. Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Phil Burbank, a sadistic cowboy who runs a cattle ranch with his brother (Jesse Plemons) in Montana in 1925. When his younger sibling secretly marries kind-hearted widow Rose (Kirsten Dunst) and brings her to live with them, Burbank determines to do everything he can to grind her down. No one is spared his unrelenting cruelty, least of all Rose's teenage son (Kodi Smit-McPhee), a sensitive soul whom he mocks as "Little Lord Fauntleroy". As the ruthless bully, Cumberbatch has never been better. Playing entirely against type, he imbues Burbank with menace and heartbreaking vulnerability, and Campion deftly ekes out the suspense as his rigid ideas of what it means to be a man poison everything around him. The result is an unbearably tense masterpiece, delivered with snarling intensity.
