Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Although clearly well-intentioned, Bosnian director Danis Tanovic's dramatised reconstruction of an infamous pharmaceutical scandal becomes distracted by a wraparound storyline involving the moral dilemmas facing film-makers seeking to discuss contentious topics. Excited to be joining the (fictional) multinational Lasta after working for a company with a dubious reputation, Pakistani sales rep Emraan Hashmi hopes to give his wife a better standard of life. But Hashmi is compelled to quit his job when a doctor provides him with evidence of the infant deaths being caused by mixing a bestselling brand of milk formula with dirty water. His actions also attract the attention of director Danny Huston, who needs to clear up a few murky issues before greenlighting a biopic. Tanovic uses this subplot to let the laudably committed Hashmi tell his story in flashback and identify the company at the centre of the actual case. However, it also diminishes the potency of an exposé that otherwise makes harrowing use of real-life archive footage to condemn corporate complacency.
