Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Rugby School relocates to the Bowery for this RKO adaptation of Thomas Hughes's celebrated novel. This is more about taming street urchins than reforming the iniquities of 19th-century public schooling, a fact confirmed by the presence of Dead End Kid Billy Halop as Flashman. Oozing with liberal sentimentality, the script places more emphasis on the saintly deeds of Cedric Hardwicke's Dr Arnold than it does on the suffering of its eponymous hero. Of the boys, Freddie Bartholomew is less Fauntleroyish than usual as East, while Jimmy Lydon is clearly out of his depth as Tom. The Robert Newton remake is infinitely superior.
