Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

A masked maniac is killing only the virgins among the local high-school teens in this sprightly shocker from Romper Stomper director Geoffrey Wright. Cleverly toying with genre conventions, Wright's unpretentious psycho chiller reverses the "have sex and die" theme of late-1970s horror movies, as the rush to get deflowered at a student organised orgy has the parents' blessing. The brisk script sparkles with quirky characters, off-kilter situations and crisp campus dialogue. You don't have to be Hercule Poirot to guess the identity of the killer at its centre, but ultimately that doesn't matter because the fine line between spoof and splatter tiptoed by cast and crew alike adds its own sense of danger and suspense. Wright's vigorous direction keeps up the pace even in the latter stages when he has to resort to conformity for a satisfying conclusion.
